Top Places to Ride Your PWC in Pennsylvania

As the owner of a personal watercraft (PWC), you know that the best places to take your vessel are those with clear waters and scenic views. Fortunately, Pennsylvania is teeming with rivers and lakes just waiting for you to explore them. These are the best places to jet ski in PA!

Bald Eagle State Park

Bald Eagle State Park is a 5,900-acre recreational area in Centre County, between Milesburg and Lock Haven. It’s home to Bald Eagle Mountain. Wrapping around this mountain is a 1,730-acre lake, a popular spot for anglers, boaters and campers. As you ride your PWC across the water, you can enjoy the sights of the surrounding forests and wetlands.

Bald Eagle State Park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. When launching your PWC, you have a few launch options:

  • Hunter Run West Launch: This 24-hour-access launch is located by the Russell P. Letterman Campground.
  • Hunter Run East Launch: This 24-hour-access launch is located off East Launch Road.
  • Winter Launch: This year-round pier is 24-hours and ADA-accessible, as well as usable at all water levels. You’ll find it on the north end of the beach.
  • Bald Eagle Boat Launch: This lit, 24-hour launch is in the nearby town of Howard.
  • Upper and Lower Greens Run Boat Lunches: These 24-hour-access launches are located off PA 150. The lower launch is also a fishing pier.

When the boating concession area at the marina is open, they sell gasoline and can help with some boat-related repairs, if necessary.

Lake Erie

Lake Erie is the smallest of the Great Lakes by both volume and depth, but it still holds the title for the eleventh largest lake in the world by surface area. It is also one of the top outdoor watersport destinations in Pennsylvania.

Lake Erie is divided into three separate areas — the western, eastern and central basins. Pennsylvania offers the easiest access to the eastern portion of the lake, which is also the deepest of the three basins, at an average of 80 to 210 feet.

Compared to the other Great Lakes, Erie’s waters are the warmest and most comfortable, making it perfect for exploring the area with your PWC.

Presque Isle Bay

Although Presque Isle Bay is a part of Lake Erie, it is a popular boating destination in its own right. Presque Isle State Park — a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula off the coast of Erie, Pennsylvania — shapes the area that makes up Presque Isle Bay. Riding your PWC near the park means you’ll get to see some of the area’s natural beauty, including several types of migrating birds flying overhead.

Vista Launch is most suited for launching your PWC, but the Niagra and Lagoon launches are also suitable for small vessels.

Because campers, swimmers and beachgoers frequently enjoy Presque Isle State Park, make sure you pay attention to all posted speed restrictions near the shore.

Lake Wallenpaupack

If you ask any local where to take your Sea-Doo or where to go jet skiing in PA, they will likely direct you to Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos. At 13 miles wide and 5,700 acres total, Lake Wallenpaupack is the third-largest manmade lake in all of Pennsylvania.

Lake Wallenpaupack

There are four boat launches you can use on the lake, including:

The Lake Wallenpaupack area is a popular tourism and weekend destination, so there are many places to service PWCs nearby, as well as an abundance of non-watersport recreational activities.

Schuylkill River

Schuylkill River offers a unique urban PWC experience thanks to its location. Schuylkill borders the city of Philadelphia, allowing boaters to take in the sights of the city while still enjoying the feeling of the great outdoors. The river begins in the mountains near Tuscarora, PA, and flows 137 miles southeast until it meets the Delaware River.

There are several public access points located along the water trail, making it easy to find the best launch spot for your PWC.

While boating here, keep in mind that it is a popular paddling destination. Be sure to stay aware of your surroundings as you power through the water.

Delaware River

The Delaware River touches three states, including Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. The Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, shared by New York and Pennsylvania, is the longest free-flowing river in the Northeast. There are a few obstructions here to take note of, including boulders, rapids and eel weirs. It’s also worth noting that most of the land surrounding this area is privately owned.

The Lower Delaware National Wild and Scenic River is the longest of the Delaware River’s sections, as well as the most popular. Visitors and residents of New Jersey and Pennsylvania frequently enjoy this section of the river. There are dozens of launch points along it, so you should have no trouble finding one that’s convenient for your PWC.

Beltzville Lake

Beltzville Lake is a favored hotspot for boating and fishing at Beltzville State Park in the Poconos. The lake spans nearly 950 acres, and no vessel is permitted to travel over 45 miles per hour. This Carbon County lake is formed from the Pohopoco Creek Dam and reaches more than 125 feet deep.

Both of the launch points at Beltzvile Lake are ADA-accessible. You can choose from:

  • Pine Run East Launch: This three-lane launch is on the northern shore of the lake.
  • Preacher’s Camp Launching Area: This two-lane launch is on the southern shore of the lake.
